Vase Size Finder

Tell the finder how tall your stems are and how the arrangement should read — it returns the vase height range and mouth opening that will hold them the way they are meant to stand.

How it should read

The one-third to one-half rule

Florists’ rule of thumb: the vase should carry about one-third to one-half of the finished arrangement’s total height, with the stems making up the rest. Fall below one-third and a bouquet goes top-heavy; push past one-half and it reads stumpy. The finder keeps you inside that band and adjusts it by shape — dome bouquets sit best on a narrower mouth that grips them at the waist, loose stems want room to fan, and compact centerpieces belong in wide, shallow bowls.

Frequently asked questions

Does the rule change for artificial flowers?

The proportions are the same, but faux stems give you two conveniences: there is no waterline to hide, and most stems can be trimmed or bent at the base. You can size the vase for the look first, then adjust the stems to fit — the opposite of the fresh-flower workflow.

How do I measure stem height?

Measure from the top of the tallest bloom to the cut end of the stem, with the stem straightened out. For a pre-arranged bouquet, measure it the way it is meant to display — the finder works from finished height, not loose-stem length.

What if my stems are a fixed length?

Run the finder with the stem length you have. If the vase it suggests is taller than your stems allow, flipping the ratio — shorter vase, more stem showing — is the safer adjustment for dome shapes; loose stems tolerate both directions.
